There was a day not so long ago when deer hunters across North America were absolutely fascinated with big bucks. No, not big racks — big bucks.

Much has changed since the first few issues of Deer & Deer Hunting. It's only gotten better.

It’s the instant you realize that sapling in the brush-choked creek bottom is actually a deer’s leg; that branch is really an antler; that flitting bird is actually a twitching ear. Everything changes when the ambient becomes the very thing you’re seeking. The therapeutic becomes the stressor. And the warm and fuzzy feelings are transfused with pure adrenaline.

It was not penned with deer or deer hunting in mind, but a form of situational ethics — the theory of “the ends justifing the means” — has definitely crept into our deer camps.

The fondest memories of my youth weren't of video games, amusement parks or heated swimming pools. As bland as this might seem, my best memories came from the morning sports page and the 20-acre soybean field across the road from my parents' home.
